From Casual to Competitive

Club Esports at WMU aims to provide an opportunity for casual and competitive gaming within the collegiate system. Whether you just play a little Minecraft on the weekend, or you're pushing top 500, we hope you will join our vibrant community! We strive to be welcoming, respectful, and successful. Above everything else, we aim to elevate our fellow community members while we achieve outstanding competitive results.

Can I play?
Am I good enough?

You must be a full-time student at WMU with a GPA of 2.25+. There are two tryouts per year. The first major tryout happens in the fall - this is for every game, and sets up our rosters for the fall semester. Tryout dates and times are posted in announcements and events. There are also a smaller set of tryouts after winter break for most games. Make sure to fill out all required tryout forms and know where you need to be for the tryouts, whether that is online or in-person.

Being highly ranked isn't the only thing that makes a great teammate. Communication, being tilt-proof, and being a leader are all things that make up a great teammate beyond skill. Of course, mechanics and knowledge are important, but making a team is not always just choosing the highest rank players and going from there. We evaluate each player with the help of our coaches in order to make the best teams possible. We use rubrics that include much more than just skill, so please, if you are interested and want to go for it, do it! You might be surprised at how far attitude and willingness to learn can get you.

What are teams like?

Our club teams are dedicated and driven groups of players that love to improve while having fun playing their game. It's also a great environment to meet friends! We tell people to budget for around 15hrs a week of games which includes practice, scrims, and official matches (including weekend time) - however this number is NOT a hard-stop and there could be more or less time depending on the competitiveness of the team. Note that varsity positions will be generally more demanding. This may sound a bit scary, but we have had 100s of students move through our program by now and so far time commitments have not been a huge issue. Focus on school first, and stay organized, and you'll be able to achieve whatever you need to.
